Men can also experience multiple orgasms —that is, climax several times without needing a long break in between. However, this is usually only possible if they learn to separate ejaculation from orgasm .

What is a dry orgasm?

A male climax is usually followed by a so-called refractory period : a recovery phase in which the body "recharges" and pleasure subsides. This phase can last anywhere from a few minutes to over 30 minutes—often shorter in young men, longer in older men.

This pause is likely triggered by the hormone prolactin , which rises sharply after ejaculation and inhibits arousal. At the same time, the hormones adrenaline and noradrenaline drop—which explains why many men feel tired or sleepy after sex.

What is different for women?

Although women also release prolactin after orgasm, their adrenaline and noradrenaline levels rise simultaneously. This could explain why women are more likely to experience multiple orgasms in succession.
